I have spent years learning things the hard way. Things I wish someone had whispered to me in that waiting room before we walked out into a world that does not always make space for our kids. When people hear that my son Zahir is nonverbal they often get a look on their face that I have come to recognize. It is a mix of sympathy and uncertainty.
